Abstract: Leningrado, 1941. I gemelli Viktor e Nadya hanno dodici anni quando la Germania di Hitler dichiara guerra all'Unione Sovietica. Nel giro di pochi giorni tutti i bambini della città vengono caricati su treni speciali che li portano in salvo dall'avanzata nemica. Per un errore, però, Viktor e Nadya finiscono su treni diversi e perdono le tracce l'uno dell'altra. Entrambi cominciano a scrivere su dei quaderni quello che accade loro mentre il nemico avanza: il gelido inverno, la carestia, la disperazione di un popolo prostrato dalla fame e dalle bombe; ma anche il calore dell'amicizia e la forza della speranza. Mentre Nadya si trova a difendere con ogni mezzo una postazione chiave per la Resistenza sovietica, Viktor attraversa a piedi la sconfinata terra russa, affrontando ogni sorta di pericolo per portare a termine la sua missione. In una Leningrado cinta da un assedio che durerà quasi novecento giorni, la Grande Storia si intreccia con quella di Nadya e Viktor, decisi a ritrovarsi a ogni costo e a salvare la loro città.
