Abstract: È l'estate deI 1947 e Thomas, un monelIo cresciuto per le strade di Amsterdam, racconta la storia dell'inverno appena passato, che sembrava non finire mai, ma che poi si è sciolto come neve al sole. Thomas e il padre sono soli perché la madre è morta di tifo. È finita da poco la guerra e tutto è ancora sottosopra. A scuola Thomas sta sulle sue finché arriva un tipo particolare e fuori dal gruppo, e i due diventano amici inseparabili. Lentamente e attraverso i racconti del suo nuovo amico, Thomas scopre che cosa è realmente accaduto durante la guerra: il suo amico è ebreo e la sua famiglia è stata quasi interamente deportata nei campi di concentramento in Polonia da cui nessuno è mai tornato. Il racconto di un'epoca e di un'amicizia.
